My friend Sarah is not a hippie. Not even close. She is more like Jackie O. She raises kids, adopts dogs, hosts dinner parties, sits on boards, creates new works of art on a whim and can drive a truck and dig a ditch with the best of them. And she always looks put together. She's got style and that comes not only from how she carries herself, but how she takes care of herself. And she does it with natural products and a big heaping of common sense. So when Sarah says: NO PARABENS in the products you use on your skin. I listen.
Just consider this... We know it is a medical fact that estrogen stimulates breast cancer and that anything absorbed through the skin may be as high as 10 times the concentration of an oral dose. (Think about how nicotine and birth control/hormone patches work. Chemicals are delivered to your system through the skin)
Then consider this: The EPA has reported that PARABENS, which are chemical preservatives and come in several forms (methy, propyl, butyl and thyl) mimic your body's own hormones and can have endocrine-disrupting action when they are applied to your body. The disruptors interfere with your body's endocrine system: hypothalmus, ovaries, thyroid. Virtually every system...
There was another study done in England which shows parabens present in samples from women with breast cancer. "Their detection in human breast tumours is of concern since parabens have been shown to be able to mimic the action of the female hormone oestrogen," she said. "Oestrogen can drive the growth of human breast tumours. It would therefore seem especially prudent to consider whether parabens should continue to be used in such a wide range of cosmetics applied to the breast area including deodorants
NOW- go take a look in your bathroom and look at how many of your shampoos, soaps, deoderants, cosmetics, skin creams etc etc have one or several PARABENS in them.
Parabens are put into products to give them a shelf life of years. (Really though. How many years do you need your shampoo to last? Organics typically have a shelf life of 3-18 months)
And, which is more important? The shelf life of your deoderant. Or your own shelf life?
I have switched recently to products such as St Ives apricot scrub, Avalon Organics shampoos and conditioner, Burts Bees soaps. The choices are endless when you know what NOT to buy....
