Jan-Feb '07 Newsletter

My original idea to keep up a CedarHill Blog has fallen by the wayside I see. The last post was nearly a year ago. My new plan is to be less ambitious and go for simply a monthly update on CedarHill - the B&B.

This one will serve to catch me up to March. The winter has been kind to us this year and even in January and February, we've had many days in the 60's and 70's. Of course, last year, Mother Nature chose to dump a huge snow storm on us in March. So you never know. The real challenge this year will be cooling the west side of the house from the afternoon sun. I hear we are supposed to have a "hotter-than-normal" summer. Hmmm. Who doesn't believe in Global Warming now?  I'm envisioning a canopy of shade cloth between the house and building next door.

The house underwent some work on the inside. The guest bathroom was re-done in Chinese Red. It had gracefully aged for 15 years with the same wallpaper and it was time for a change. The hallway got all new white trim....and I'm slowly working my way through the entire house to makBathroom07webe all the trim white. And the floors are getting a new coat (and of course a new color) of paint.

I discovered Robert this year...my ACE landscDaisieswebaper... thanks to Ev who had used him on her house. He is meticulous and is helping me with everything from basic maintenance to planning for what gets planted. (We have taken out several Agave plants. Those are the ones which really hurt if you get speared by one. Not exactly the effect you want on a walk-way where guests come and go) We are going for "friendlier" plants. ANd ones with color.

For those of you who don't know.... economic conditions in Globe-Miami are really picking up with the rise in copper prices. Most of the mines around here are re-opening or expanding operations and hiring at a brisk pace. This is putting pressure on the housing market and keeps CedarHill busy - both as a temporary host until people can find permanent homes....and with our extended-stay apartments.

We try to keep the two front Guest Rooms available to travelers... but if we can't accomodate people, I'm happy to report a new B&B opened up in Miami - The Copper Miners Rest (www.copperminersrest.com) - who is helping to host travelers and weekend visitors to the area. Bedroomhometourweb_1

The new Theater is still a "gleam in the eye". The ground has been cleared for building, but they haven't actually broken ground. When it IS built, there will be a four-plex theater just a block from us.

This Spring will be very busy for us....and the community. It is Globe's 100th Anniversary and the Centennial Committee has all sorts of things planned from a block party to a Musical.  You can catch the list of events by logging on to my new publication at www.globemiamitimes.com.  See:  Events

It is a great time to visit the area!

Best Regards,

Linda

March/April Newsletter

The big news in March whether you were a Bed and Breakfast or a shop owner was the weather!

Despite a few warm weeks preceeding this snow storm, WINTER was not through with us yet and with buds coming out of the ground a big storm blew into town and blanketed the area on March 11th with big,fat,wet...snow flakes.Mvc037s While the moisture was much appreciated, and some of the first we'd had in over 5 months, the snow downed powerlines, broke tree branches and stranded hundreds of motorists here in the community. Snow34

You never know how much you appreciate electricity, until you have none. The downed powerlines affected a huge area from Roosevelt to SanCarlos and cut power to everything; gas pumps, stores, even phones. The only gas available in an 80 mile radius was out at the casino which ran their pumps with generators. (But after nearly 16 hours of pumping gas- even they ran dry)

Here at CedarHill we ended up with an extra full house, when the folks staying in the apt below checked out on Sunday....but then found they couldn't GET OUT of town and came back to spend another nite. And the guests staying on our main floor, who were good Iowa girls and used to snow storms and power outages were good sports about taking showers by flashlights and hanging out in a somewhat dark, and somewhat cold house. Copy_of_snow_007

We were one of the many houses with central gas heat. Great - until you have no electricity and nothing to blow that wonderful gas heat throughout the house.I think we all felt fortunate for what we did have though - considering over 200 people had to take shelter at the High School.

The following weekend, ANOTHER storm came through, but only dropped snow in the higher altitudes. It was odd really. I looked out one side of our front porch and watched snow decend on the Pinals (see above pic) ....and out the other side of our front porch was the Pear Tree - budding out. Copy_of_snow_006

January/February Newsletter

C_454 January is typically a slow month in Globe, and this year it has been an unusually warm - and dry-one. We haven't had rain since....hmmm October, and though we've had a number of 30deg nites, the days have all been in the 60's and 70's.

The big event which has every in town scurrying  in some direction or the other is the upcoming Historic Home Tour.

HOME TOUR:   Feb 18th-19th   beginning at 9am

CedarHill was on the Home Tour several times in the last 14 years, and so I know how much work goes into preparing for this event. It is never as simple as agreeing to open your door to strangers. No- it seems to push the dormant "to-do" list to the top. All those things that people have thought about doing to their house - now get done, because of the Home Tour.

The town fills up for this event and some of the Hotel/Motels in town "bump" their rates. This has been an issue which reached a peak during the recent (in October) Indian National Finals Rodeo, in which every room in town was booked, and some hotels were bumping rates as much as 200% or more. I heard tales of $59 rooms going for $99 - $250 PER NITE.  This is one of those penny-wise/dollar foolish approaches. I think there was enough flak over the INFR that we won't see this type of price gouging in the future.  Monam_020_1

But if you are coming to the Home Tour - you need to book now.  And confirm the hotel rate before you check in.   Here at Cedar Hill, our rates stay the same, whether it is a busy weekend in town - or not.  The only concession I made, beginning this year, is to require a minimum TWO NITE stay during those very busy weekends.

In addition to preparing for Home Tour weekend, Monam_005_1CedarHill is going to host a Wedding in May and I'm starting to plan the yard - and get things planted in the ground which will make for a beautiful Spring Wedding.

We also have exciting new additions Downtown! The new owners of the old Mesquite Bar and Grill will be opening on SUPERBOWL SUNDAY.  The Mesquite has been closed for 4 years and its a shame because it is one of those classic OLD buildings which draw people to the area. Well, now its doors will be wide open once again. It promises to be an upscale coffee bar, and Italian Restuarant. for more information go to www.globemiamitimes.com

December Newsletter

Decadentdesserts_002 Ooops, It is the middle of December and I'm just getting around to writing our newsletter. Doesn't it seem the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas just flies?

We are getting ready to host our first Annual Christmas Event.  We've always decorated and socialized for the Holidays, but this year I'm hosting a competition of sorts around Desserts. It seems everyone has a "famous" dessert, or would like to try out one of those great receipes which are so beautifully photographed in the magazines.  Hence, our Decadent Dessert Sunday was born.   We have 5 categories in which people can enter desserts: Martha Stewart (which is all about presentation, of course); Julia Child (decadent, over the top desserts):Paris Hilton (which is the I-didn't bake it. I had someone do it for me...dessert); the Not-Ready-For--Prime-Time Award (which are all those great desserts we grew up with-but wouldn't win a beauty contest)...and the Fabulous Cookie Award.

Originally I was just going to have everyone who came to the party "vote" in some manner and then prizes would be awarded. But I was grilled the other day on the street as to WHO is judging, HOW they will be judging and IF they might be biased by their relationship with some of the "bakers."

I realized this is serious stuff.  So I'm approaching independents. I'm going to the Fire department and Police Department to find judges. (OK, so that's not a bad PR deal either - to feed your local police and fire really, GOOD desserts!)

Stay tuned for the final outcome and more pics from the evening!

As for the rest of the month: We have had a quiet Month here at the house with the exception of projects, like finishing the trim painting. We had family in last week and the town brought in the Christmas Season with their annual Light Parade downtown last Saturday.  Ad1

This year, my friend Molly, at Seasons helped to decorate the house and is responsible for the HUGE 7' wreath which we are going to talk the Fire Department into hanging for us on the front.

Its a good season to be in Globe!   Hope you are having a warm holiday Season where ever you are.    Cheers.  Linda

November Newsletter

Besides the gorgeous Fall weather which keeps us in short sleeves during the day and warm sweaters at night, the big news at Cedar Hill this month is PAINT.

We are anticipating the arrival of our painter any day now to start painting the west side of the house and all the trim. (I love to paint, but not when I'm 20 ft off the ground!) C_795The west side is the "high" side of the house and the dormer windows on the 3rd floor are more over 20 ft) For this reason, these have been passed over for years, when other parts of the house have had regular touch up paint jobs. So both the house and I will benefit from the talents of a professional painter!

And having the trim painted, offers a chance to change colors.I'm tired of the slate grey trimC_796_3 which seemed like a perfect match 12 years ago, but has faded and looks old. The new trim color is a warm cream and if the test swatches are any indication, it will lighten the appearance of the house.

Copy_3_of_tues_104As for my projects,I deepened the color in the kitchen to a rich golden yellow, painted a few sunflowers on my hallway wall, Aptpics_015and found a great painting in a magazine which has inspired me to buy more paint...and look for a new room in the house.........maybe the bathroom?

Recently we hosted one of the competitors in the Indian National Finals rodeo and his family, and rumour has it that we may get to host Santa and his wife in early DecembeCopy_3_of_tues_106_1r.

So, you see, life around Cedar Hill is never dull.

There is a new weblog for the Globe-Miami area which will be a good source for local news and events and opinions for those of you wishing to get a better flavor of the area...

October Newsletter

The nip is in the air and Fall is arriving. The mornings have begun to cool off, although the days are still in the 80's. It all makes for great hiking weather for all you outdoor geeks! We have some wide open spaces to explore at the end of Icehouse Canyon. If you follow the road to CC camp (a small campground with tables and bathrooms) you can park there and hike for miles into State-owned land. The Ferndale Trail is my favorite and winds its way through lower desert and up through the tall pines.  For those slightly less adventursome, we have Round Mountain Park which has well developed trails which takes you over some rugged terrain within about a 3 mile loop. (Just behind Country Kitchen - off hwy 60)

Sea1_003Plus, we have a new addition to shopping in the Historic District.

SEASONS, a country store, opened up October 1, and has homemade preserves, Sea1_001country antiques, unusual gift items and ...well, great seasonal gifts! (Hence, their name.) They plan on turning over the store each quater to reflect the new season and keep the store fresh. Check out the pictures of their place on myPHOTOWORKSblog.

Here at CedarHill, we are getting ready for a FALL CLEANING sale the weekend of Oct 22/23.

I was talking to Mother and she agrees; we don't need to keep everything!  Well, that started the process and in doing so I discovered a trunk full of vintage baby clothes from the turn-of-the-centure. OK- so I'm not selling those, because I'm going to use them in my Photography business to create Vintage photoshoots..

But then there are items like hummel figures, jewel tea sets,German China, old quilts, tools, art supplies, jewelry and more...PLUS, my friend Sarah, who used to have the wonderful womans store: Simply Sarah's, is going to join me and clear out her "Barn". I'm not sure what all that entails, but it is sure to be more treasures. We are  going to set up DOWNTOWN @ Kenneths Lot.

If you're not from here and don't immediately know where that is- it's simple: Look for the empty lot with the great carved iron-work gates just south of Palace Pharmacy.

And if you haven't heard already..... There is an EXCURSION TRAIN coming to Globe this fall. The new director of Globe's Downtown_023_1 Mainstreet Program (for the last 9 months); Kip Culver, has been working hard on multiple fronts to enhance downtown and he is in the final stages of working with Eastern Arizona Railroad and the Casino, to bring an excurision train to the old Depot at the end of South Broad.

Currently, their are plans to run the train between Globe and the Casino. Prices, dates, times etc still have to be worked out. THe project has a 4 month window to test the public's response. But how can you not LOVE having a train downtown!

Stay tuned for more information on this exciting prospect.

September Newsletter

Labor Day is almost upon us and with that another month has arrived! The cooler weather makes you want to be on the front porch, or on a horse in the mountains, Dscf8959or hiking in the hills. And...you can do all of those things HERE in the Globe-Miami area. My friend Gene Hazen takes out horseback riders from his place on Six Shooter Canyon for an hour - or a day. Rates are $12/hour and you'll love the company and the quality of his horses. He has raised his family here for the last 50 years and knows the area....and his horses.  You can reach Gene at 928-425-6661 to make reservations.

Dscf89451 Miami Fiesta Days   September 17th

A BIG EVENT coming up this month is Miami's Fiesta Days which hosts the Now-Famous Chihuhua Races. It is a not to be missed event involving over 40 entries of small canines which their owners swear ARE chihuhuas - although some have very long legs for chichi dogs. It is a HOOT of an event to watch and we are very pleased to be hosting , ZORRO and his family (from Tucson)again this year for the 2 day event.  Zorro took third place last year and you can't appreciate what an amazing feat that is until you see how TINY he is. He is the smallest chihuaha I've ever met....and darned cute too . He's got a big heart though...and loves his folks - so he runs like a speed demon in these races. Look for pictures in upcoming posts of Zorro and the rest of the contestants.   Go to  MiamiAz.org for a complete listing of Fiesta activities.

North American El Charro Competition  @ the Pavillion

As they say in Texas, before there were cowboys - there were vaqueros working the big, wide open ranges of Texas. The Apache Gold Casino will be hosting hundreds of teams, competing in the North American competition at the end of this month. Wearing traditional clothing and adorning their horses with silver and tooled leather; this event promises not only a great show, but a flashy one as well!                        The excerpt below is taken from a CNN article:

"The charro is above all a horseman, heir to a centuries-old equestrian tradition. It was the Spanish conquistadors that introduced Mexico's natives to horses and cattle. The collision of the two peoples created the cowboy culture. The contemporary Mexican rodeo, the charreada, grew from the informal contests the cowboys held among themselves to show off ranching skills like bronco riding and roping. They describe their sport as living history, an art form drawn from the demands of a working life. "                                 http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/9705/04/mexico.charros/

As for the Bed and Breakfast:  Our room rates have gone back to $60 for the Winter Season, and our One-Bedroom Apartment is still available for either Extended Stay travelers (3 months or more), or nightly. See the post under Apartment Available for more information on the rates and amenities.  We are enjoying the approaching Fall Weather and looking forward to seeing you in Globe!    L
